Funded by The National Trust and Cumbria Arts in Education with support from United Utilities. A 2 year educational project with The National Trust and four Cumbrian primary schools.
Phase 1 focused on the new eco building at St. Catherines, near Windermere. As the building evolved the schools investigated the materials and technologies used in its construction plus its wider message of ways of reducing carbon footprints. Creatively the pupils expressed their research in making a series of their own eco shelters, in the form of giant nests, from an old tyre, twigs, wool fleece and lime and straw.
In Phase 2 the pupils took their new found knowledge and applied it to their own school practices. Creatively each school expressed their eco focus through the making of a series of three dimensional signs that were placed in key locations throughout each school. The signs were primarily made from materials rescued from landfill. Most of the signs have an interactive aspect that encourages the school community to continue to reduce, re-use and recycle long after the project has finished.
